Newsletter -- January/February, 2002.

The February membership meeting of the Putnam County Historical Society will be held on Saturday, February 16th at 3:00 P.M. at the Bronson-Mulholland House in Palatka. Our guest speaker will be Larry Roberts. Mr. Roberts will have a slide presentation and lecture on early Florida memorabilia. He also will be autographing his new book, Florida’s Golden Age of Souvenirs – 1890-1930. Mr. Roberts is a Florida native and is owner of Robert’s Antiques in Micanopy. He became interested in early Florida memorabilia about twenty years ago and has actively collected ever since. Whether you are a collector of Florida memorabilia or just a Florida history buff, you won’t want to miss this extraordinary presentation. Immediately following Mr. Robert’s presentation and book signing, refreshments will be served in the dining room. Please invite a guest to join you for our program.

Please check the mailing label of this newsletter for a “smiley face”. If you have a yellow sticker on your label it means that we have not received your membership renewal in the Society for this year. The ability of your Society to function is dependent on its membership. We want you to continue to be a part of the Society as we work for the preservation of our rich history.

Our Grounds Committee will have a workday on Saturday, February 9th from 9:00 A.M. until 12:00 noon. If your ‘green thumb’ works even in winter months, please join us for our morning activity. Also, on Saturday, March 9th our House Committee and Museum Committee will be meeting in their respective buildings from 9:00 A.M. until 12:00 noon. If you haven’t met our new docent, Guy Tillis or if you want to find our “what’s happening” at either site, please join us.

On Saturday, March 23rd you are invited to join us for a trip to Mount Dora. Mount Dora will be having their Annual Antique Fair. We want to “check out” their fair and possibly bring back some ideas that we could use for ours. We also plan to ride the Mount Dora Cannonball train that goes from Mount Dora to Tavares. The train departs Mount Dora at 11:00 A.M., 12:40 P.M., 2:20 P.M. and 4 P.M. The cost is $12 for adults and $11 for seniors over 55. Because there will be a lot of people in Mount Dora on this weekend, we would like to purchase tickets in advance for this date. If you would like to attend this event with us, we request you call the Museum at 386-325-9825 between February 10th and 17th with your name and the number of people in your party. We will be leaving the Bronson-Mulholland House at 8:00 A.M. and car-pooling to Mount Dora. This should be a fun day for everyone! We will be returning to Palatka at approximately 6:00 P.M.
